Chapter Fifteen

Mia

“Oh, this is bad,” I said. “Lucy, that’s not Trace. Bryce just confirmed it. The vampire that bit you...that’s Trace.”

“No, we’d been flirting for weeks on the YourOneAndOnly dating app.”

I glanced at her sidewise. “It wouldn’t be the first time someone posted a photo of someone else on their profile. He obviously didn’t want you to know what he looked like in person.”

“So, he targeted me?”

“Looks like it.”

“But why?”

“That’s a good question.” I thought about the other girls he’d taken. “Weird.”

“What?”

“The girls he’d taken were young. Teenagers.”

“Right, but I’m twenty-one. What gives?”

“And he didn’t end up taking you.”

“You think he changed his mind?”

“He must have realized you weren’t the right fit which explains why he went after you at the mansion to correct his mistake. And when I came tearing down the hall to help you, he had no choice but to back off.”

“But that was the end of it. I never saw nor heard from him after that.”

“No, the fledglings were sent to campus looking for you. Remember?”

“I don’t understand. I’m just a college student from a middle class family. There’s nothing special about me and I’m pretty sure I haven’t done anything to piss them off. Why me?”

“I don’t know. What did you talk about?”

“The usual. We flirted mostly and he sent me pics of his ripped torso.”

“Oh, Lucy.” I couldn’t help smiling.

“What? It’s a dating site and sexy pics are exchanged. Often.”

“I get it. No need to explain.” I laughed. “So, there was the usual flirting but no red flags?”

“No, not really. Well...”

“What is it?”

“I didn’t think of it at the time. You know, because it’s normal to ask questions when you’re getting to know someone. So it didn’t seem weird when he asked.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked if I was raised here in Connecticut or if we’ve lived anywhere else. And I told him we’ve lived here our whole lives, but my grandparents immigrated from Serbia.”

“And you thought that was strange?”

“Looking back, yes. Only because he seemed intrigued and kept asking questions about it. I’ve never dated anyone who took that much interest in my family background. I did end up changing the subject and asked him questions.”

“Okay.”

“Does that help?”

“I don’t know, but I’ll tell Bryce so he can find out for us.”

“It’s weird that he backed off the way he did, though. He never answered my messages asking why he’d stood me up.”

“You texted him?”

“No, it was a DM through the dating site.”

“Oh, when did you send it?”

“While we were at Dulce and it became clear that he wasn’t going to show up.”

Relief washed over me. We should have taken her phone a long time ago.

“Although, I guess, I understand why now that I know he was a sleaze and probably picked me for some cult or something.”

I typed Lucy’s name into a search engine where different iterations of her name appeared. “Unless he picked the wrong Lucy Meyers.”
